Committing to the sisters and the church became so much part of her; it had helped ease so much of her guilt. She never anticipated the duties she’d end up performing for her church.

Like finding inventive ways to make a few dollars donated by some kind soul last for a month and provide for everybody under her care.

She finally understood how Jesus and his feeding of the thousands worked.

It was ironic that she did not believe in the miracles they claimed he and every saint after him performed.

But she did believe that if you were a good businessperson and you had your head on right, you could take a business and improve on it.

Trading in children was a means to an end: providing stability for them all. God had shown her a way forward so she could make sure that her orphanage prospered, as did her status in this life and in the afterlife. While it sometimes played on her conscious, she knew she was being weak in those moments, and she would strengthen her resolve and her devotion.

She would be remembered, just like all the other saints.
